WICHITA, Kansas -- Oklahoma State fell at the hands of Wichita State 13-7 Wednesday.
Preston Spingers’ grand slam put Wichita State up 12-3 and capped a six-run fifth inning for the Shockers. Will Baez knocked in two runs early in the inning on a single to center. Springer finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs scored. He drove in Cody Lassley with a single in the fourth inning.
Ryan Jones hit a two-run homer in the third to break a 3-3 tie.
Wichita State (27-15) scored two of its three runs in the second thanks to a Cowboy error. Tyler Grimes reached on a fielder’s choice, but a throwing error by Mark Ginther extended the inning. The Shockers would score their third and final run on a sacrifice fly.
Oklahoma State (24-17) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Kevin David hit a two-run single to put the Cowboys on top 2-0. He would later score on a sacrifice fly.
OSU’s rally fell very short in the top of the ninth. The Cowboys scored four runs on three hits and a fielder’s choice. However, even that was not enough to overcome a 13-3 deficit.
Thomas Keeling (3-5) suffered the loss for the Cowboys after allowing six runs (five earned) in 3.2 innings. Tim Kelley (5-2) gained the victory for WSU after giving up three earned runs in four innings.
The Cowboys return to conference play against Kansas at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Stillwater.
