NORMAN, Oklahoma -- With the school record for consecutive football sellouts near being broken, the University of Oklahoma announced that the 2010 football season will be called the “Year of the Fan.”
The season-long event will have its first event on May 1 and continue throughout the following school year.
OU is on the verge of breaking two records, which prompted the celebration. First, the Oklahoma football program is one win away from 800 career wins, which would make it the eighth program to achieve that mark.
Second, with one more football sellout, the Oklahoma program will tie its all-time consecutive sellouts streak with 69, a mark achieved from 1971-84.
“The tradition here is always humbling, but especially so when you encounter milestones like these,” said OU Vice President and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione in a release. “This is one of those brushes with Oklahoma’s success that reminds you again of just how special this place has been for so many years.
“We’ve always tried to make the fans feel part of what we do and it seems especially appropriate to make our appreciation known this year. And we want to do that well beyond football to encompass our entire department.”
Many events are planned throughout the season, including a collectable pin program, surprise giveaways and other tie-ins with social media and events at Oklahoma home games.
The most notable promotion will be the introduction of a fan-created Nike OU shirt. Three finalists will be selected and the winner will be decided by fan vote.
