KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The Oklahoma women withstood the return of Brittney Griner and advanced to the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament with a 59-54 victory over Baylor Friday.
The teams played close from start to finish, with the final five-point advantage being the largest lead the Sooners held all night. Danielle Robinson carried the Sooners’ offense for most of the night, but Nyeshia Stevenson took over when it mattered most.
With five minutes left in the game, OU trailed by two and Stevenson had only scored two points. But she scored 10 straight points for the Sooners in a three-minute span and helped hold off the Lady Bears in the game’s final minutes.
After Stevenson’s scoring spree, Danielle Robinson scored OU’s final four points to seal the win. Stevenson consistently slashed through the lane and was the only Sooner to contribute dependable scoring all night, largely thanks to Brittney Griner’s presence.
Griner played her first game since being suspended for punching an opponent, and she made it difficult for the Sooners to score in the paint. She blocked a Big 12 tournament record 10 shots and affected several others, which forced OU to rely on outside shots.
The Sooners will now face rival Oklahoma State in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. OU and OSU have played each other twice this season, and the Sooners won both matchups.
