Tulsa Players to Watch, Day 14: Jacob Bower

QB Jacob Bower

Background:

Bower played in seven games for Tulsa last season. He threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns on 15-of-36 passing. Bower originally signed with BYU out of high school, and after a two-year mission, was on the Cougars roster in 2006. But, Bower transferred following that season.

Why He’s on the List:

He was one of three quarterbacks to see action for the Golden Hurricane. There was a quarterback competition at the beginning of last season and there will most likely be another one this year.

Best Case Scenario:

It is Bower’s last season and he should have picked up a lot of tools of the trade along the way. Bower was one of two finalists for the top job last season and should benefit from suspect play at the starting position. Since this is his senior year, Bower should have extra motivation to take over signal-calling duties.

Worst Case Scenario:

There was a reason Bower could not take over the starting job. His accuracy was more than suspect at times and he never seemed to find his groove with the receivers. If this trend continues Bower will be holding a clipboard instead of throwing passes.

My Take:

The quarterback competition will most likely be open once again and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top. Bower has never been a full-time starter and is in last season as a collegiate quarterback. There is no better way to go out than as the top gun-slinger for a revived Tulsa offense.
