STILLWATER, Oklahoma -- The No. 23 Oklahoma State Cowgirls narrowly beat the No. 14 Texas Longhorns Wednesday 73-72 in an overtime thriller.
There were four lead changes in the first eight minutes of play, but the Longhorns pulled ahead and ended the first half 38-26.
Texas shot 22-for-44 in the first half, while Oklahoma State shot 11-for-40.
The Cowgirls were able to make up some of the missed shots at the charity line, shooting 4-for-6.
Both teams crashed the boards and fought for rebounds, earning six second-chance shots each.
The Cowgirls came out for vengeance in the second half, coming within two points of the Longhorns with 13:30 left in the game.
Texas once again pulled ahead but was only able to hold the lead until the last two minutes of the game. A layup by Andrea Riley put the Cowgirls within two points of the Longhorns, but two clutch free throws from UT’s Ashleigh Fontenette put her team back ahead.
Riley, with six seconds on the clock, drained a three and sent the game into overtime tied at 65.
OSU’s Tegan Cunningham opened overtime with a layup, putting the Cowgirls ahead, 67-65. UT’s Kathleen Nash answered back with a jumper. Oklahoma State went on a 4-0 run lasting almost two minutes, but a layup by Fontenette would put the Longhorns within two points of the Cowgirls.
Oklahoma State’s ability to hit free throws put them ahead 73-69 with :20 left.
UT’s Brittainey Raven hit a shot from three-point range with five seconds left in the game, but it wasn’t enough to earn the win.
Raven ended the night with 20 points and five rebounds, while Fontenette finished with 15 points and six assists.
Cunningham earned a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Riley added 33 points and three assists.
