The University of Oklahoma received its third commitment for the class of 2011 Saturday when tight end Chris Barnett from Euless, Texas, gave his verbal pledge to play for the Sooners.
“I just felt like it was the place for me,” Barnett said. “The coaches, the campus lifestyle and everything, I just felt like I belonged here. So I decided to pull the trigger and go ahead and commit. I didn’t see anything changing in my recruiting process so I was like if I had to go to school today, this is where I would be going. I don’t see that changing anytime soon.”
The Trinity High School star holds offers from Miami, Florida State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State and Wake Forest among others that he could not name. The Sooners swayed Barnett’s favor because of one important factor.
“They have a pro-style offense,” Barnett said. “When you play on Saturday you want to prepare yourself on Sundays. Me playing in a pro-style offense is good because the tight end will block, and they’ll flex them out wide, they pass block, run block and catch balls. That’s everything you need to be able to do to play in the NFL.”
Barnett said he plans to remain firm in his commitment to OU. However, one team that was missing on his offer list was Texas. His brother, Eryon, is a defensive back for the Longhorns and facing off against family was not something he wanted to do.
“It was kind of hard for me to go against him,” Barnett said. “I always looked forward to playing with him but I had to do what’s best for me.”
Barnett said he plans to major in law and would like to become a criminal prosecutor.
