What you need to know?
Oklahoma has beaten Oklahoma State six straight times dating back to Jan. 22, 2007, Sean Sutton’s first full year as the Cowboys’ head coach. That makes the record between current coaches lopsided, with Jeff Capel owning the series advantage 3-0. Both teams are coming off losing efforts against Texas Tech, and this win would help both teams crack the .500 mark.
Oklahoma State was hot to start the season, going 12-2 in non-conference play, but have stumbled since starting Big 12 play. The Cowboys are 4-5 in conference play and have lost three of their last four. OSU looked to be a lock for the tournament early on, but have to end this skid quickly if they want to have a shot at postseason play.
Meanwhile, OU has been up and down all season. The Sooners’ season has relied on strong outside shooting. When their guards shoot well, OU tends to win. When they don’t, OU struggles. It may seem simple, but such a strong dependence on shooting generally causes inconsistency. That has been the story of the Sooners’ season.
Who you need to watch?
James Anderson has been a scoring machine for the Cowboys all season. The junior forward is averaging 22.2 points per game on 46.6 percent shooting, while grabbing 5.7 rebounds per game. The man that controls the boards for OSU however is Marshall Moses. He is fourth in the conference in rebounding with 9.7 per game, while averaging 10.4 points per game.
With Willie Warren nursing a bad ankle, freshman Tommy Mason-Griffin has come into his own. Griffin has now played the most minutes of any Sooner, has the best 3-point shooting average on the team and is quickly gaining on Warren’s team lead in scoring. In one five-game span, Mason-Griffin led the team in scoring four times. Warren’s health appeared to improve drastically in the Sooners last game against Texas Tech. If both young guards are able to peak at the same time, the Sooners could have the most dangerous backcourt in the Big 12.
