TULSA, Oklahoma -- Tulsa withstood a late charge from Houston to squeak out a 65-62 win over the Cougars. Tulsa led by as much as 21 points in the second half.
Larissa Williams had 22 points to go along with 18 rebounds while Taleya Mayberry finished with 18 points.
The Golden Hurricane led 50-29 with 14:59 left to play in the game. TU saw that comfortable margin evaporate as the Cougars went on a 19-6 run to cut their deficit to 56-48.
Courtney Taylor would convert an and-one play to pull Houston to within one point with 36 seconds left. Kara Vaughn was able to get a layup with five ticks to play to push the lead to three. Britney Scott missed a last second 3-point attempt to tie the game.
The first half was a far cry from the late portion of the game. TU took full advantage of Houston’s 5:10 scoring drought, jumping out to a 16-2 lead. The Golden Hurricane looked to be cruising to an easy win after taking a 42-20 margin into the locker room at half time.
Scott finished with 22 points and Courtney Taylor added 18 for Houston.
