NORMAN, Oklahoma --Fans who participated in Sunday’s t-shirt white out were treated to an Aggies upset, as No. 13 Sooners beat the No. 8 Aggies in a quick-paced 74-65 win over Texas A&M.
Texas A&M looked to continue its seven-game winning streak, but the Sooners got off to a quick lead and refused to surrender it.
Both teams held a quick pace, putting up shots off fast transitions. The Sooners’ defense was able to force shots from the Aggies, holding them back from finding their sync.
The Aggies sent the Sooners to the charity line four times in the first 20 minutes. OU hit six of its seven free throws.
Danielle Robinson ended the half with 12 points, but also supported her team by setting them up. She had six assists by halftime.
Nyeshia Stevenson shot 3-for-5 from behind the arch, ending the first half with 14 points.
The Sooners were up 41-30 by halftime.
The Sooners continued their fast pace to extend the lead 56-44. The closest the Aggies would come to tying the game was four points, a feat they never accomplished.
The fans, donning commemorative white t-shirts and creating a “white out” effect, cheered the Sooners’ every move.
The Sooners had 12 turnovers in the second half and totaled 19 in the game. The Aggies capitalized by scoring 25 points off the turnovers.
The Sooners would finish the game strong, closing out the Aggies by rebounding shots. The team totaled 13 points from second-chance shots off 13 offensive rebounds, and out rebounded the Aggies with a total of 47 to A&M’s 33.
Robinson ended the day with 24 points and seven assists, Stevenson had 20 points, Amanda Thompson and Abi Olajuwon both recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds each.
The Sooners travel to Columbia, Mo. to face the Missouri Tigers Jan. 20. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
