TULSA COUNTY, Oklahoma -- When you celebrate your one hundredth birthday, you should probably get your wish. A Collinsville centenarian's wish was Drillers baseball on opening day.
Thursday, April 7 is opening day. The Drillers play the Corpus Christi Hooks to get the season started. I have my tickets and so does Berniece Pollett.
She turned 100 over the weekend and got her wish for her first professional baseball game.
Berniece Pollett is a serious St Louis Cardinals baseball fan. She actually likes the Texas Rangers and the Cardinals. She's little worried about the red birds.
"What's happened to Albert Pujols? He's not doing near as good as he used to," she said.
I told her I thought he'd be fine. Now she knows a thing or two about what she's talking about. Berniece used to play.
Berniece Pollett: "When I was in high school I played on the boy's ball team."
Rick Wells: "What position did you play?"
Berniece Pollett: "I think I was the shortstop."
They didn't have enough boys at her school to field enough players so she and a couple of other girls filled in.
She had a big birthday over the weekend. Her family treated her to flowers and a surprise party.
"They took me in and there must have been 30 or 35 people in there all hollering ‘Happy Birthday,'" she said.
Several generations helped celebrate her 100 years. She got the flowers and a cake, some gift cards and cash and a trip to ONEOK field to see the Drillers on opening day.
Rick Wells: "This is gonna be your first baseball game to see live."
Berniece Pollett: "One of those kind, yeah."
Meaning a professional game live. She watches every time one's on television. But if your 100th birthday wish is for live baseball, you get baseball.
"I'm a baseball fan," Berniece said.
