SAND SPRINGS, Oklahoma -- Police credit an 11-year-old boy with preventing further wrecks after he took the keys from his dad after a crash on March 15, 2011 in Sand Springs.
Sand Springs Police say officers responding to a fight outside a Sand Springs restaurant found 30-year-old Carey Purtscher staggering into his SUV. The arresting officer wrote in her report that she had to steady him to help him get out of the vehicle.
According to Tulsa County jail records, the boy told officers he had taken the keys out of the ignition after his father drove onto a sidewalk on Adams Road and struck a utility pole.
The arresting officer said the boy told her his father tried to physically force him to give the keys back, but the boy finally kicked him in the chest and knocked him down.
The boy told police he took the keys to prevent his dad from driving off.
Officers say they found several schedule IV medications on Purtscher.
Purtscher was arrested and booked into jail on complaints of child endangerment, child abuse, DUI, possession of a controlled substance and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, March 22, 2011.
