TULSA, Oklahoma -- The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality has issued a health advisory for the Tulsa area Friday because of smoke from grass and brush fires across southeastern Oklahoma.

The advisory was updated Friday afternoon:

Fires in southeast Oklahoma continue to produce widespread smoke at concentrations considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. Several fires have ignited Friday afternoon in southern and central Oklahoma.

With extreme fire danger continuing through the evening, more fires will likely erupt throughout the state. People should limit exposure to thick smoke as much as possible.

The DEQ says smoke from those fires is being pushed into the Tulsa area by strong southerly winds.

Persons with respiratory or heart disease, elderly persons, children and other sensitive individuals should avoid prolonged exertion outdoors.
