TULSA, Oklahoma -- Mardi Gras is still a week away but Tulsa-area bakers are already busy making as many king cakes as they can.
Merritt's Bakery employees will work around the clock to bake more than 2,000 cakes before Fat Tuesday. Bakers start with three pounds of sweet dough, add a filling in the middle, then cut and braid the dough into a circle.
"Everybody needs something to look forward to; something fun and exciting and Mardi Gras is just that; It's just a party," Larry Merritt, owner of Merritt's Bakery, said.
Here's something you might not know: the yellow, green and purple you see on top of all the cakes represent faith, power and justice.
