TULSA, Oklahoma -- The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is warning bank customers about a scam involving debit cards.

Thieves steal your card number and make purchases, generally over weekends, when many banks are closed.

Here are some easy ways to protect yourself:

  • Only use your debit card when it stays in your hand, like when you scan it at the gas pump.
  • If a purchase requires the card be taken away from you, like in a restaurant, use a credit card instead.
  • Check your bank statement often so you can catch unauthorized purchases.  Thieves might start with purchases as small as a few dollars, then work up to much bigger purchases after that.
