Monday's winter weather caused problems across the board.

Tulsa Firefighters responded to a house fire in West Tulsa Monday evening.  The fire broke out at a home in the 4900 block of West 11th Street about 6 p.m.

The mom, dad, and four young children were using a space heater to keep warm when the fire started.

"They work really well. But most space heaters are open in the front to where any type of combustible that gets too close to the space heater can cause a problem," said Tulsa Fire District Chief Eddie Bell.

In this case, a nearby blanket caught fire.

"It's a problem, it really is. We understand that people are trying to keep warm, but it's really, really important that any kind of secondary heating device, that you check it," Bell said.

Firefighters not only had to battle the flames, but the bitter cold temperatures as well.

"It's just a difficult situation this time of year when it's so cold," he said.

The home is a total loss and the Red Cross is now helping the family. Firefighters expect to respond to more house fires like this because of the weather.
