TULSA, Oklahoma -- There is a good chance that dentists in the Tulsa area could be getting really busy now that Halloween is over. With all of those sweets, both kids and adults are bound to have some problems with their teeth.
One Tulsa dentist, Oklahoma Smiles of Tulsa is offering free dental screenings. Those screenings are for kids and it is going on Thursday morning.
The U.S. Census Bureau estimates in 2009 Americans ate an average of 25 lbs. of candy per person. Much of that candy is eaten around several holidays, like Halloween and that makes it a busy time for some dentists.
The American Dental Association says when plaque on your teeth comes in contact with sugar it creates an acid. That acid can break down tooth enamel and eventually cause tooth decay. Here are some tips from the ADA to help protect your sweet tooth.
The ADA suggests eating sweets with meals rather than as snacks. The extra saliva in your mouth from your meals helps neutralize cavity causing plaque acid. And if you have sweets at all, remember delay leads to decay.
The free screenings are for kids up to the age of 20 and are taking place Thursday from 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. at Oklahoma Smiles of Tulsa at 401-A South Utica.
