Volunteers Create Broken Arrow Rain Garden

BROKEN ARROW, Oklahoma -- Volunteers are building something really cool in Broken Arrow. It's the first of five rain gardens planned for the Tulsa area.

The rain garden is located at the Ray Harral Nature Center on Third Street. Crews sunk the garden down into the ground so rain runoff from the parking lot will go into the garden instead of a nearby stream.

"Water can soak into the ground, plants can use nutrients and soils can break down oil and stuff like that," said Kevin Gustavson, an environmental educator.

"Basically, a rain garden can improve the water quality and lessen the water load on our streams."

An Environmental Protection Act grant is paying for the five rain gardens.
