TU Research Suggests Algae May Be a Great Fuel Source

TULSA---The University of Tulsa received a grant from the federal government last year for $750,000 to expand their research on turning algae into fuel. Today U.S. Representative John Sullivan toured three labs dedicated to the algae-fuel project.

‘There's really ground-breaking technology going on here at the University of Tulsa,' he said, ‘it's very exciting turning algae into fuel for cars, truck busses airplanes… everything.'

TU professors say models suggest algae grown domestically could meet 50% of the nations fuel needs.

‘Algae will grow in saltwater, it will grow in very arid regions,' said TU Engineering Dept. Chairman Jeffery Price, ‘it will grow in regions where we couldn't even think of growing a real food crop like corn for ethanol.'
