SEQUOYAH COUNTY -- Picking up traffic cones proved fatal to a 62-year-old Arkansas man. James Foreman was killed by another vehicle after getting out of his car to put the cones in the trunk of his Honda Accord, according to a report by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
The accident took place at about 6:15 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 40 just east of Sallisaw.
A sergeant with the OHP told NewsOn6.com that Foreman did not work for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and was apparently stealing the traffic cones. He had the odor of alcohol about his person, according to the accident report.
The OHP says the Arkansas man had parked his 1993 Honda Accord on the shoulder of the interstate and got out on the highway when a pickup driven by 46-year-old Doris Small of Wilburton approached in the right lane.
Small swerved to miss Foreman but was unable to avoid contact because the left lane was closed for maintenance. Foreman was pronounced dead at the scene by Pafford Emergency Medical Services.
Small and her two passengers were not injured. There were three passengers in Foreman's car, including a 2-year-old boy. None was injured.
