TULSA, OK -- A group of Tulsa Police officers began a three-day trek to Stillwater Monday morning to remember a fellow Tulsa police officer who was a U.S. Marine who died in action in Iraq in 2006.
‘I just can't put into word what it means to me what these guys are doing,' said Mark Wollmershauser, who organized the walk. He was expecting just a few walkers to make the trek, and ended-up with dozens volunteering for the walk.
The group is raising money for Special Olympics in honor of Corporal Jared Shoemaker. Their goal is $10,000 and they are nearly there. The officers participating in the 69-mile walk will be walking with full backpacks.
Corporal Shoemaker was killed in action on September 4, 2006 by an improvised explosive device during Operation Iraqi Freedom. His mother Linda Shoemaker was on hand to lend moral support to the walkers.
‘Jared would be amazed,' she said, ‘he would be very humbled as we are, but also very thankful that people would want to something good in his memory.'
