Icy Road Conditions To Blame For Several Accidents In Tulsa

TULSA, OK -- Slick spots are to blame for several accidents overnight Tuesday.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says a woman driving on Highway 412 near 209th West Avenue hit a patch of ice on the Shell Creek Bridge. Troopers say she lost control, hit a wall and came to rest in cable barriers. The woman was not hurt.

Officers say ice is to blame for a four vehicle crash that shut down part of I-244. The accident happened just west of Peoria. The interstate and Highway 75 had to be shut down while crews waited for sand trucks.

Crews were also out sanding Highway 11 just west of Harvard after a five car pileup there. Officers say the cars hit a cluster of ice and slid into the walls. The roadway was closed while crews sanded the area. 

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation says drivers should be especially cautious of black ice on bridges and ramps because they are the first to freeze. 

If you think you won't slide because you have a four wheel vehicle, they say to think again. Don't assume your vehicle can handle all conditions. Also, don't use cruise control while driving on slippery surfaces. 

If your vehicle does slide, steer the same direction you are sliding and take your foot off the gas and brake. 

One of the most important tips -- always wear your seatbelt.
