PONTOTOC COUNTY -- An 18-year-old Ada man was killed during a pursuit by Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers Sunday morning in Pontotoc County.
Joshua C. Kelley died of massive injuries after being ejected from his 1997 Chevy SUV at about 2:23 a.m., according to a report by OHP.
Pontotoc County Sheriff's deputies initially tried to pull Kelley over for driving his vehicle through residential yards on a county road north of Ada. Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper James McKee joined the chase when Kelley refused to stop.
McKee took over the primary lead position in the pursuit and performed "a tactical vehicle intervention maneuver" on Kelley's vehicle, causing it to spin into the center median. The teen's SUV then rolled numerous times, and Kelley was ejected from the vehicle.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by Ada first responders and State Medical Examiner Waylon Mullins.
There was an odor of alcohol on the driver, according to the trooper's report. Kelley was not wearing a safety belt. The trooper was not injured.
