TULSA, OK -- The city of Tulsa takes a step toward banning "driving while intexticated."
In a unanimous vote Thursday night, the Tulsa City Council voted to urge the state to ban texting behind the wheel. If not, they want the power turned over to cities - so Tulsa can outlaw texting while driving in the city limits.
The vote came after the state House Public Safety Committee convened a hearing on Thursday to take testimony from law enforcement and public safety advocates on the seriousness of the problem in the state.
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has launched a campaign to pass laws banning text messaging while driving in all 50 states. A law prohibiting texting or sending e-mail while driving went into effect in Arkansas last week.
