TULSA, OK -- The injured man at Sunday's shooting at Riverbank Apartment in Tulsa was not the intended victim, according to Tulsa Police Sgt. Doug Brown.
The "extremely intoxicated" 17-year-old shooter was arguing with a woman at the apartment and intended to shoot her, the police officer said.
"He was extremely intoxicated and armed with a gun he bought off the street yesterday," Brown said of the shooter, who is currently still at large.
The shooting took place at the apartment complex at 6542 S. Newport at about 1:30 Sunday afternoon. A 22-year-old man was transported to a Tulsa hospital after being shot in the chest. He is in serious condition, according to EMSA spokesperson Tina Wells.
The shooter, his victim and several females were at the apartment when an argument broke out. The 17-year-old fired a shot and hit the 22-year-old man instead of the girl he was apparently aiming at.
Tulsa Police are searching for the shooter who was known to the victim. He was described by witnesses as having some kind of mental illness or "mental challenge" according to police.
"We're still trying to piece it together," Sgt. Brown said.
The shooter is described as a black male about 6'1" and 175 pounds. He has used the apartment as his home address in the past, but does not actually reside there, the police sergeant said.
