EUFAULA, OK (AP) -- McIntosh County prosecutors have charged the mayor of Eufaula with four counts of embezzlement.
According to court records, Robert Smith pleaded not guilty to the charges on Thursday and was released on a personal recognizance bond.
Assistant District Attorney Greg Stidham says the four counts involve alleged misuse of a city credit card used for fuel charges.
Meanwhile, Smith issued a letter to police chief Don Murray, telling him he had been suspended from duty with pay until a September 17th hearing.
In the letter to Murray, Smith said he is recommending Murray's termination "for the good of the service."
Neither man could be reached for comment.
