MCALESTER, OK -- A Kay County woman has been charged in Pittsburg County with trying to smuggle a cell phone and charger, hidden in her shoes, into the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester.

Authorities charged 43-year-old Joy Jefferson of Kildare, after a correctional officer using a hand held metal detector found a cell phone and charger hidden a hole cut out in each shoe.

A warrant has been issued for Jefferson's arrest.

State prison officials say cell phones are considered contraband and prisoners are not allowed to possess them.

Officials note that still doesn't stop attempts by visitors to smuggle them into the state prison.
