OKMULGEE--Martha Berryhill celebrated her 109th birthday surrounded by loved-ones and wellwishers. Joining in on singing the traditional Muskogee songs the 109-year-old didn't let her age show as she waved to the crowd and shook hands with admiring schoolchildren.
'It's really an honor to be in her presence,' said Rochell Werito, 'she's the last living original allotee, which means she was one of the very first to be enrolled (into the Muscogee Nation), that's when you were put on the Dawes Rolls, between 1897 and 1906.'
Born in Okmulgee county July 12th, 1900, Martha Berryhill still lives at home with family. She commented to her niece Geri Johnson when she was reminded of her upcoming 109th birthday "that's too old! Oh well, I've been blessed!"
