Owasso Pitcher Selected in MLB Draft

Left-handed pitcher Austin Kirk from Owasso was taken in the third round of the Major League Baseball's amateur draft.

TULSA, OK - Left-handed pitcher Austin Kirk from Owasso was taken in the third round of the Major League Baseball's amateur draft.

Kirk was the 29th player chosen in the third round (109th overall) by the Chicago Cubs.

This past season he led Owasso to its third-consecutive 6A baseball title, pitching a complete game four-hitter against Edmond Santa Fe in the title game.

Kirk had a record of 9-1 this season for the Rams, throwing two no-hitters against Jenks during the 2009 season.

He signed a letter-of-intent to play for the University of Oklahoma.

Left hand pitcher Chad James from Yukon High School was the first player from Oklahoma to be drafted. He was taken 18th overall by the Florida Marlins.

James is the first player from Oklahoma to be taken in the first round since Owasso's Pete Kozma was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals with the 18th overall pick in 2007.

University of Oklahoma right hand pitcher Garrett Richards was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels 42nd overall.

Oklahoma State right hand pitcher Andy Oliver was drafted 58th overall in the second round by the Detroit Tigers.

Oral Roberts right hand pitcher Jerry Sullivan was taken in the third round (83rd overall) by the San Diego Padres.

Pitcher Jon Reed from Tulsa Memorial was selected in the 21st round (629th overall) by the Cincinnati Reds.
