CHOCTAW, OK -- Fire crews continued to work in the Choctaw area, trying to put out hotspots as they flared up.

Meanwhile, homeowners were allowed to return to their homes, many of them finding nothing more than ashes.

"You wonder why it skips some homes," Choctaw resident Tina Dockery said. "It's terrible."

One resident discovered her neighbors' homes had all burned, but hers somehow survived.

The high school in Choctaw also survived, but at least 18 homes were destroyed.

Some homes in the Velma area in Stephens County were on fire Friday morning, and many of those fires were still burning by evening.

North of that area, near Lindsay, 12 homes have burned.

The firefighter burned fighting a fire near Wellston on Thursday suffered burns to 26 percent of his body. He is in stable but in critical condition.
