SAND SPRINGS, OK -- A project that started in 70's is finished. ODOT and Sand Springs city leaders held a dedication ceremony on Monday for lights along Highway 97.
The lights were part of the plan when the highways and bridges were built more than 30 years ago. There are now more than 100 lights on a two-and-a-half mile stretch of highway.
Sand Springs Mayor says besides making it a safer drive, he hopes it will unite the community.
"So many years, our community has thought north of the river or south of the river and the bridge has always been the dividing point, the Arkansas River. So finally, with the lights up, it's that common link as we drive at night," said Sand Springs Mayor Bob Walker.
Sand Springs contributed more than $122,000 to go towards paying for the lights.
