TULSA, OK -- Because of the tough economy, there may be no better time for one Tulsa-area sale than right now. Just Between Friends, as it's called, is a giant consignment sale for parents. It's going on at the Tulsa Fairgrounds beginning this weekend. And, more local families than ever before are taking advantage of the discounts.
"All through the middle is clothes, starting with boys' clothes up to girls' clothes," said Darbi Newman.
Darbi Newman has been buying and selling baby stuff at the Just Between Friends sale since her four year old twins were newborns. She says it's a good way to make extra cash.
"My checks are anywhere between $300 to $700 depending on how much I bring that year," said Darbi Newman.
But, this year all of this kids gear means more to her family than ever before.
"I was laid off last week and my husband just started a new job at the beginning of the year. He was laid off at the end of last year. So between the two of us we have really felt the crunch," said Darbi Newman.
Selling her old stuff means she can buy new stuff.
"I can come and buy quality clothes and name brand clothes that I may not be normally able to get, especially right now after being laid off," said Darbi Newman.
One thing Newman likes about the sale is that consignors set their own prices and that can mean big savings for shoppers. For instance, one bouncer is $40 and another is $25.
There are oceans of kids' clothes, some of which have never been worn, strollers, swings, furniture and toys.
"We have so many items that everyone is going to leave here very pleased with their purchases," said Shannon Wilburn.
Shannon Wilburn runs the show at the fairgrounds. She says they have a record number of families taking part this year.
"I think it's probably because of the economy. People are looking for ways to save money and make money and so this is a great opportunity for them to do both of those," said Shannon Wilburn.
The sale is at the Tulsa Fairgrounds and opens to the public at 1 p.m. on Sunday. It runs through next Saturday.
