BARTLESVILLE, OK -- A Bartlesville jeweler is giving away necklaces on Valentine's Day to those affected by the tough economic times.
Jewelry is traditionally an extravagant token of affection for your loved one on Valentine's Day. But, jewelry may not be possible due to the current recession. Despite that, one jeweler is hoping to make it happen.
"Some of these people without the jobs can't afford, they just can't afford anything. So, we decided that we would give away the heart necklaces to bring some hope you know," said Dayna McCoy, owner of McCoy Jewelers.
Her store is giving away sterling silver necklaces with heart pendants to those who are currently without jobs or whose homes have been foreclosed on.
"We had a friend in California who came up with idea that she would like to spread a little light in this gloomy world right now with all the bad stuff that's going on. She said, I want to give away some necklaces. So, we found some sterling silver necklaces with hearts, because Valentine's is coming up," said Dayna McCoy.
McCoy Jewelers has 100 necklaces to give out on a first come first serve basis.
"He wanted it for his daughter, which I thought was pretty cool. So, he got the pink one because she is 14," said Chad Upton with McCoy Jewelers.
Customers can be eligible if they bring an ID and some sort of proof of recent hardship.
"We just want them to show us that they really lost their job, and when they do that, we let them pick. There are three different styles. They can pick out what they like," said Dayna McCoy.
The giveaway is organized through the Independent Jewelers Organization. McCoy's is one of 45 stores participating in the program across the country.
McCoy Jewelers is located at 306 S. Dewey Avenue in Bartlesville. Their phone number is 918-336-4300.
