FEMA Gets Decent Marks For Ice Storm Response

EDDYVILLE, Ky. (AP) - State officials in Kentucky are giving the federal government good marks for its response to a deadly ice storm.

That's even though more than 300,000 residents still don't have power, and some areas still haven't seen aid workers nearly a week after the storm. It's a fact not lost on some local authorities in rural areas who say the response has been slow.

Gov. Steve Beshear asked President Barack Obama for a disaster declaration to free up federal assistance Thursday, two days after the storm hit. Obama issued it hours later, and a Federal Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman says supplies started arriving Friday.

On Saturday, every single Kentucky Army National Guardsman was activated, and many of the supplies they've been distributing have come from FEMA.
