Rash Of Trailer Thefts In Mayes County

MAYES COUNTY -- Trailer thefts are a constant problem across Green Country. Law enforcement officers want people to be on the lookout after a rash of recent thefts in Mayes County.

Police say thieves have been stealing all kinds of trailers that have been left out and unlocked.

"Ten foot, 12 foot, 14 foot, it just varies," said Sheriff Frank Cantey, Mayes County.

Investigators with the sheriff's office and Chouteau Police Department say it's been a busy and costly couple of weeks.

"They're easy to take and hard to trace," said Sheriff Cantey.

The sheriff's office is currently investigating thefts in Adair, Locust Grove, Pensacola and another west of Pryor.

They are also investigating several other thefts in Chouteau. Three trailers were stolen there in a span of just two days. All of them were taken in broad daylight.

Deputies and police are working to find out who is responsible, but say until that person is found, trailer owners should be extra cautious.

"Put as many chains and locks on them as you possibly can, because they're trying to get them fast and the more stuff that you have on them, the harder it is for them to take them," said Sheriff Cantey.

In addition to using locks and chains, investigators say it's also important to write down serial numbers in case your trailer is taken and then recovered.

The trailers sell for about $1,000, up to several thousand, making it an expensive problem.
