ROGERS CO. -- A man is in critical condition after his pickup truck was struck by a freight train south of Claremore on Wednesday afternoon.
A small Ford truck was westbound on a private drive when it tried to cross a southbound train on the west side of State Highway 66 near Port Road.
The truck spun and flipped after being hit, pinning the 58-year-old driver. He was freed and flown to a Tulsa hospital.
"You're talking about a 6,000 ton piece of equipment that's travelin' on some tracks. That's a lot of force, a lot of impact," said Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Matt Sullivan.
The crossing was marked but did not have railroad arms. Witnesses said the train did not appear to be speeding and was sounding its horn.
