NATIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY:

A cold front moving across the east coast states brought showers and thunderstorms from the Carolinas to FL. There were several reports of wind damage across southeast VA and eastern NC with numerous trees down as well as some power lines and roof damage reported. Moderate to heavy rain fell from VA to southern New England with 1-2 inches of rain common. Many stations set new daily rainfall records, including Providence, RI with 1.36 inches.

Across the northeast, freezing rain and sleet fell over much of interior PA, southern NY and parts of central New England. Ice totaled over a half inch in many areas from northeast PA into east central NY. Further to the north, snow fell from northern NY into northern New England where up to 6 inches of new snow was reported in areas. Rain changed to snow from OH into western PA as colder air filtered in through the day. Light snow also continued across much of IN and MI with a couple inches of snow in areas near Lake MI.

Very heavy rains fell across western WA and northwest OR as a warm, moist flow continued from the Pacific. 2-5 inches of rain fell over much of this area with record daily rainfall reported at a few locations. Rain has caused many rivers to overfill there banks and more rain will fall here today adding to the flooding threat. Heavy rainfall over the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges has produced a high risk for avalanches in the area. Rain and heavy mountain snows spread into northern ID where flooding is also becoming a concern. A mixture of rain and snow fell across MT but snow accumulations were minimal. A few inches of snow was reported over the mountain areas of western WY and northern CO. High pressure kept the southwest US quiet under partly cloudy skies.

ON THIS DATE IN HISTORY:

In 1953, the northeast US was hit by a severe ice storm which coated parts of PA with up to 4 inches of ice. Two to three inches of freezing rain fell over southeastern New York and southern New England. The storm caused 31 deaths and $2.5 million in damage.

In 1973, a major ice storm brought 1 to 4 inches of ice across northern GA leaving 300,000 people without electricity for a week. In the Atlanta area, the storm disrupted the city closing schools and businesses. Damage from the storm was estimated at $25 million.

In 1990, high winds swept through the northwestern US with gusts of 90 mph near Pinehurst ID, and 96 mph at Stevenson, WA. The high winds downed fifty-five million board feet of timber estimated at more than $20 million.
