Bald Eagle Watchers Flock To The Arkansas River

TULSA, OK -- A number of bald eagles are known to winter in Oklahoma, especially along the Arkansas River that flows through Tulsa. 

The birds nest in the northern stretches of the U.S. and in the fall, many fly to northeastern Oklahoma to find food for the winter. 

By March, bald eagles return to the northern U.S. 

In Oklahoma, bald eagles tend to feed early in the morning. 

Wednesday morning, SKYNEWS 6 was flying over the Arkansas River near 91^st and Jones Riverside Airport when News On 6 photojournalist Charley Willsey spotted a bald eagle family enjoying breakfast on a sand bar in the middle of the river.   

The Tulsa Audubon Society and Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation holds a number of bald eagle watching days in January, including one on January 3, 2009.
