TULSA, OK -- Doug Lawrence, the Tulsa Oilers all time scoring and penalty minute leader will have his No. 9 jersey retired prior to the Oilers game against the Oklahoma City Blazers at the BOK Center on January 23rd.
"Dougie is one of the true characters and all time greats since the CHL started up again in 1992," said Oilers general manager Taylor Hall. "It was amazing how the fans would react to him and when I came back here this year, I was amazed at how so many people around town still talk about the good old days when Doug Lawrence was playing."
"So now the BOK Center will have a permanent reminder of what Doug did for the Oilers, and really the entire CHL," said Hall.
Lawrence still ranks second on the CHL scoring list with 875 points. He is the all-time CHL assist leader with 684, and all time penalty minute leader with 2,109.
"This is awesome, quite an honor," said Lawrence. "I'm sure I'll be pretty nervous that night."
In addition to the CHL records he holds Lawrence holds numerous Oiler marks since the CHL reformed in 1992. He is the Oilers' career leader in games played (428) assists (560) points (1,571) and penalty minutes (1,571).
Lawrence's number 9 becomes the fourth number the Oilers have retired. Millard "Sonny Boy" Wakeford (number 12); Luc Beausoleil (number 17) and Mike Berger (number 44) are the other players who have been so honored.
