NATIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY:

Across the eastern-two third of the country, a lingering cold front produced scattered rain showers and thunderstorms across the Gulf Coast region of Texas and Louisiana, the Southeast, and portions of the Carolinas. No severe weather was reported with any of this activity, but areas of heavy rainfall were experienced. Vicksburg, Mississippi received 1.73 inches of rain, and 1.83 inches fell at Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Further north, strong winds ripped across the Great Lakes region, the Ohio Valley and the Northeast. Winds gusted to 73 mph at Saginaw Bay, Michigan; and gusted to 60 mph at Lake City, Pennsylvania. High temperatures of 10-20 degrees above normal were felt across the Northeast, the Great Lakes region, the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, the Mid-Atlantic region, the Southeast, and the central and southern Plains. New Bern, North Carolina set a new daily high temperature record of 77 degrees, which broke the old record of 76 degrees set back in 1971. Kennedy Airport in New York City, New York also set a new daily high temperature record of 62 degrees, breaking the old record of 58 degrees set back in 1971.

In the West, a series of disturbances brought winds, rain and snow to northern California, the Pacific Northwest, the northern Rocky Mountains, and the northern High Plains. Heavy snows fell at the higher elevations with 12.5 inches of new snow reported at Essex, Montana; and 10 inches of new snow reported at Glendale, Idaho. The lower elevations experienced rain showers, with heavy rains affecting portions of northern California. Crescent City, California was the big winner of the day with 4.16 inches of rain. Arcata, California also received 2.63 inches of rain. Fair and dry conditions prevailed across the rest of the West.

ON THIS DATE IN HISTORY:

In 1830, a strong winter storm produced 30 inches of snow at Peoria, Illinois, and 36 inches at Kansas City, Missouri. The cold and snowy conditions continued until the middle of February.

In 1954, a winter storm brought 26 inches of of snow in 24 hours to Fort Scott, Kansas, which established a state record.

In 1984, one hundred cities in the central and eastern United States reported record high temperatures. Kansas City, Missouri went from a morning low of 60 degrees, to an afternoon high of 71 degrees.
