Bargain Hunting On The Day After Christmas

TULSA, OK - The day after Christmas is what some are calling the new black Friday.  It's one of the busiest shopping days of the year as retailers look for a boost from a slower than usual holiday season.

Some shoppers were taking advantage to stock up for Christmas 2009.

The line started before sun-up and nearly a half-hour before the doors opened.  Dozens of Tulsa shoppers were hoping to cash in.

Many stores, like Target, offered doorbusters as enticement for the early morning crowd.

Analysts say retailers are looking to make up for a holiday season that dragged through a struggling economy.

SpendingPulse reports sales are down nearly 8% this year compared to last, with the biggest drop coming in electronics and large appliances.

Clearer numbers on the holiday season are expected in two weeks. But, analysts say regardless what happens on Friday, it won't be enough to make up for a slow Christmas season.

The National Retail Federation says the day after Christmas is usually the best time stock up on decorations for next Christmas.  Jennifer Lamb knows that all too well.

"This is all Christmas. This is the ritual, day after Christmas shopping," said Jennifer Lamb.  "Add to a few things.  Maybe pick up a couple of presents for next year."

She's just the kind of shopper retailers are looking for.  And, Lamb says the money saved makes the effort worth it.

SpendingPulse also reports online sales were down this year as well by more than 3%.  In the past, online sales have grown each year by nearly 20%.  On the other hand, Amazon.com says it had its best ever holiday season.
