MIAMI (AP) - The National Hurricane Center says Subtropical Storm Laura is moving toward the cold waters of the north Atlantic and expected to gradually weaken over the next few days.
The 11th named storm of the season was centered about 485 miles south-southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland, at 5 a.m. EDT Tuesday and moving north near 13 mph.
Laura's maximum sustained winds are near 60 mph. The hurricane center says a gradual weakening is forecast and Laura may lose its tropical characteristics by Thursday.
Subtropical storms draw energy both from the atmosphere and the ocean surface and are more spread-out than tropical storms. Tropical storms draw strength primarily from the water. Subtropical storms can also become hurricanes.
