TULSA, OK -- One of Tulsa's first alternative schools is celebrating 35 years of successfully preventing drop-outs. Street School is a tuition-free alternative school and counseling program.
As part of Thursday's celebration, the school took a trip back in time. Classrooms were set up to show what things looked like through the decades.
In the past 35 years, the school says it's served about 6,000 students. It says more than 70% of those students went on to college. But, it all started with some community volunteers in 1973 who wanted to give drop-outs another chance.
"They saw a need and developed a place for these kids to drop back in and so that's how we came to be and how we got our name Street School," said Street School Executive Director Dr. Lori McGinnis.
Tulsa's Street School has been so successful, it's not only used as a state model, but a national model as well.
