Across the East, high pressure ruled most of the region. Skies were partly cloudy to mostly clear with dry conditions over the Northeast, Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, and Deep South. A record low temperature was set in Caribou, ME at 27 degrees. Most of the Southeast was also partly cloudy, but a few showers and thunderstorms developed across Florida during the afternoon hours. Rainfall amounts over an inch were reported in Key West, FL and Fort Meyers, FL. Scattered rain showers also developed across coastal areas of the Mid-Atlantic as a system remained offshore. Gusty winds were expected to create coastal flooding as water was pushed onshore. Winds of 35-45 mph were recorded.
In the central region, a cold front moved from the northern Plains into the Midwest. The front triggered scattered showers and thunderstorms from northern Minnesota southward into Kansas. A wind gust of 60 mph was measured in Perry, IA. Hail fell in South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, and southeastern Nebraska, but was generally the size of golf balls or smaller. Heavy rainfall produced flash flooding near Brookville, KS. Water was over roads in that region. Showers and thunderstorms were also reported in southern Texas. The rest of the southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley were partly cloudy with dry conditions.
Over the West, most of the region experienced fair skies and dry conditions yesterday. Partly cloudy skies were observed in California, the Desert Southwest, southern Rockies, and Great Basin. A few rain showers developed in the northern Rockies early in the day. Rainfall pushed into the Pacific Northwest late in the afternoon and evening hours ahead of an approaching system. Clear skies in the morning hours in the Pacific Northwest led to a record low temperature at Redmond, OR of 23 degrees.
