Across the eastern two-thirds of the Nation, widely scattered showers and thunderstorms developed across Florida and the Georgia Coast during the afternoon hours. No strong storms occurred, but a few contained moderate lightning and locally heavy rains. To the west, isolated showers and thunderstorms occurred across Southeast Texas and Louisiana. Nothing strong developed and rainfall totals were generally light. This activity subsided quickly during the evening, leaving mainly dry conditions by midnight. Meanwhile, very warm air pushed east out of the Rockies and into the northern Plains and the Upper Midwest. Highs surged into the 80s and 90s, which is well above normal for this time of year. Elsewhere, a large area of high pressure brought dry and cool conditions to the Great Lakes, the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, the Mid-Atlantic, and the Northeast.

In the West, widely scattered showers and thunderstorms developed once again across the Great Basin, the central and southern Rockies, southeastern California, and portions of the Desert Southwest during the afternoon. No strong storms were reported, but a few isolated locations experienced brief heavy downpours. The best coverage of showers was across the higher elevations, generally. Meanwhile, a low dark overcast blanketed coastal sections of the Pacific Northwest through the afternoon. Temperatures struggled into the 60s as far inland as Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon. In contrast, dry and hot conditions occurred east of the Cascades across the interior Pacific Northwest and the northern Rockies. Highs surged into the 80s to near 90, generally and some locations approached record territory. Pendleton, Oregon saw the mercury soar to 90 degrees, tying the record set in 1984. Elsewhere, dry and mild weather occurred across much of California.
