WAGONER, OK -- There is nothing quite like the smell of fresh baked bread or cookies right out of the oven. But, what if eating those foods made you sick? People with celiac disease can't eat normal baked goods. The culprit is gluten. Now, a gluten free bakery in Wagoner is offering some alternatives.
Becky Campbell is putting the cream filling in some cup cakes. It's a product she calls a Glinky.
"Glinkies, they're our version of the Twinkie," said Becky Campbell.
Of course, their version contains no gluten. Gluten is a protein in many grains, and people with celiac disease can't eat products with gluten. It can cause damage to their small intestine.
"There is nothing in the store that has wheat, barley, rye and oats," said Becky Campbell.
She opened her store and bakery about 6 weeks ago. Her youngest son has celiac disease. She'd been baking special things for him and thought she could maybe help others since gluten free products are sometimes hard to find.
"It's getting better. As the disease is being diagnosed, more people are doing it. More companies are coming out," said Becky Campbell.
As she finds more gluten free products she adds them to her inventory. There's a Cheerios substitute called Perky O's.
"Rice Chex have just become gluten free," said Becky Campbell.
A lot of people like the baked products they make at the store. Campbell's oldest son, Steven Clay, is in the back making pizza bread. They are little sauce, cheese and meat-filled pockets of gluten free pizza dough.
"You have to make sure your meat is gluten free, too," said Becky Campbell.
They make cookies, dinner rolls, bread, pie crust, bread sticks. They've just started baking hamburger buns. On Saturday mornings at the bakery, they do doughnuts.
For now, the bakery is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday only. For more information on products and special orders from CC's Gluten Free Food, call them at 645-6451.
