A new discount drug program could help families struggling with the economy. It promises savings for those barely making ends meet. News On 6's Chris Wright reports Muskogee County pharmacists say these days, many of their customers simply can't afford their medication.
They hope this program will provide at least a little relief.
Charlene Hibbard, who has been coming to Muskogee's Economy Pharmacy for more than three decades, is fortunate enough to have health insurance. But, she says she knows plenty of people who are not as lucky.
"Some people out there have a set income and they are suffering greatly because they are having to give up necessities to pay for medications," said Charlene Hibbard, Economy Pharmacy customer.
A new discount drug program in Muskogee County claims it will lend a hand to the uninsured. Headed by the National Association of Counties, it promises an average 20% discount on all prescriptions and refills.
The program is open to everyone, but the card can't be used for medications covered by your insurance.
Muskogee County hopes this program will help people who unfortunately have to make the tough decision between their prescriptions and other necessities.
"The way the economy is right now, people are having a lot trouble. They're deciding between gas, food and medication. They're having a lot of trouble and this can make a good impact," said Chris Schiller, Economy Pharmacy.
Anyone interested can enroll at a participating pharmacy. Chris Schiller says there are no forms to fill out or membership fees, and the card can be used immediately.
He hopes those in need of assistance will take advantage.
"It's really beneficial to me to save those people that come in everyday, who really need help. It really helps me out to save them some money," said Schiller.
Ten Muskogee County pharmacies are participating in the program. Click here for more information.
