The first day of school is right around the corner, but some families need help getting ready. The News On 6's Rick Wells reports an Owasso church is helping families in its community get prepared for the big day.

The New Heights Church in Owasso is offering back to school haircuts, school supplies and an eye check-up.

"We do this because the sole purpose for our church is to reach out to our community," said Dena Cryder.

Cryder is the project coordinator; she says last year they gave out school supplies to more than 400 kids. Upstairs volunteers put backpacks together for this year.

Wal-Mart helped the church get the backpacks at a discount. They have lists of required supplies from the different schools.

Frances Scott was there with her son.

"We're getting his school supplies, a haircut and trying to get him some clothes, just getting him ready for school," said Scott.

This is the eighth year for the back to school program a small church filling a big need in its community.

The Back to School medical Mission is open until 8 p.m. Wednesday.  New Heights Church is on North Main across from the Owasso City Hall.
