We're in the middle of Oklahoma's second annual tax-free shopping weekend and customers are really hitting the stores hard. The News On 6's Jeffrey Smith reports the Oklahoma Tax Commission says shoppers will save about $6.5 million this weekend and with the first day of school about two weeks away, parents especially say the tax-break couldn't have come at a better time.

"Tax-free I mean helps out a whole lot. Especially with the price of gas and everything right now, it's a big help," said Al Crook.

At the Promenade Mall, Crook was out buying new sneakers for his sons. His kids like the kicks, but dad likes the savings.

"Thirty dollars or so, big savings, it's a big difference," said Crook.

"It brings all the people to get that discount that they need. Especially in these times, with the economy the way it is," said American Eagle Manager Terri Graves.

Graves says her store's been packed since she unlocked the door.

"We're seeing lots of grandparents. Lots of parents out here buying for all the kids," said Graves.

"It's tax-free, and it helps saves a lot of money," said Sandy Garger.

Garger says between two grandkids, the savings go right back into the register.

"Probably $50 or so. At least an outfit for one kid," said Garger.

If you buy clothes or shoes priced under $100, you don't pay a cent in taxes. That's a savings of 8.5%.

"It's the busiest weekend pretty much of the year. Busiest day of the year, even more so than Black Friday," said Pac-Sun Manager Russ Maloy.

And with school starting up in a few weeks, it's a lot of back-to-school shopping.

A sweet sound for shoppers and a big boost for business.

The tax-exemption only applies to clothes and shoes, but other stores at the Promenade Mall like perfume and lotion shops are offering their own special discounts this weekend only so they can increase sales.

The tax holiday ends Sunday at midnight.
