Tulsa police believe the John Kastner was leading a secret life. News On 6 anchor Latoya Silmon reports the police affidavit outlines a past riddled with lies and million dollar promises to family, friends and Tulsa Public Schools. Police say that provides motive.
For those who trusted John Kastner, the news is as unbelievable as the lies they say Kastner told them.
To many he's simply Coach K.
"We got along just fine. He ran events for me. He, uh, I never had any issues with Coach Kastner," said TPS Athletic Director Dr. Stephanie Spring.
Tulsa police believe John Kastner, an English teacher at Webster, who coached cross country and helped the football team had some extra-curricular activities that lead him to commit murder.
"There was evidence in a journal that indicates the world was crumbling around him and I'm not sure if he knew of another way out or not," said TPD Chief Ron Palmer.
During their investigation into Kastner's wife's death, police say they discovered a pyramid of lies. Investigators say he told family and friends he inherited a fortune and had access to millions through an Israeli charitable group called '713 Corporation'.
Police say his wife even quit her job as an attorney for the Oklahoma Supreme Court to work for it. They also say he promised to take his family to Israel the day of the murder, but the flight times didn't exist and Kastner's passport was expired.
Then, there are the promises he made to Webster High school.
"Coach Kastner had been up at the service center discussing helping fund the driver's education program which falls under my umbrella of sports and activities to the tune of 75 to 100 thousand dollars," said Dr. Spring.
Dr. Spring says she never received any of the money.
TPS says Kastner also pledged 80 to 90 thousand dollars for football equipment, and that he would set up a foundation to disperse two million dollars for Webster Academics over three years. Police say Kastner was set to meet with school officials to discuss his money plans the day his wife was murdered.
"When people make promises like that you just kind of believe it when you see it kind of thing. What I'm disappointed in is the tragedy that a mother has lost her life," said Dr. Spring.
Kastner is being held without bond.
