There's No "I" In Team - Especially When You Race For The Cure

They say there's no "I" in "team. I certainly believe that!

Last year I had a team as part of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.  But it wasn't all about me. It was about the thousands of women and men who will be diagnosed with breast cancer and those who are in the battle right now. I had walked in the race in years past, but this was the first time I had led a team!

Viewers were invited to sign up to be part of my team, and they certainly did! More than 100 folks joined the effort. Some were survivors; some were walking in honor of others, but all united for a good cause. Each year, thousands of people lace up their sneakers and participate in the race.

Last year, 175 teams joined in the effort.  These were teams from local companies, families and friends. It was a great chance to take a step in the right direction in finding a cure for breast cancer. The money raised during the race will help so many.  A portion of the proceeds funds national research with the goal of one day a world without breast cancer.  But a large part of what's raised stays right here in Tulsa. 

The Tulsa Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure grants thousands of dollars to local groups and programs to provide services to folks in the community... women who might not be able to afford a mammogram or surgery or other treatments. The money has also helped pay for wigs for women who are undergoing chemotherapy. Grants have also helped the Indian Health Care Center to provide breast health services to Native Americans in Tulsa. And those are just a few of the specific programs being funded.
